Almost every rank in this material is borrowed from a human institution — the Roman army, the medieval court, the imperial civil service. That is worth noticing: a tradition that ranks its spirits as dukes and presidents is telling you what it thinks power looks like. Rank is always a claim made by a particular text, never a fixed property of a figure, and the hubs below say which text assigns what.
