The Roman rite of exorcism as fixed in 1614 and used essentially unchanged for 385 years. Twenty-one opening rubrics of caution, then the rite itself. Its three signs of possession are the most widely cited diagnostic criteria in the Western tradition, and are far shorter than the list popularly attributed to it.
